John and Georgina (Georgie) Eastwood have lived in several different cities. About 15 years ago, they left Ottawa for Montreal. Then, for personal and family reasons, they decided that they wanted to retire in the Ottawa area.
"We knew that we wanted to be in the west end," said John. "We wanted to be in close proximity to our daughter and her family. [Plus elderly] parents live in Mississauga and we were thinking of relocating them to Ottawa area. So, we were pretty focused on the west side and leaning towards Stittsville."
After their large two-story home in the heart of Montreal, they set out to find a suitable bungalow. They never considered (at first) that they should or could consider the "new" market. So they spent an amount of time exploring the resale market. However, the resale bungalows were boxy. "They had all the bedrooms on the main floor," said Georgie. "That really cut down on the entertainment space."
"Then, I remember that we were out on a cold wintery day," said John. "We just happened to see the sign for Metric Homes [Timbermere community in Stittsville]. We saw their rep that day and she asked if we wanted to talk to one of the two owners. About 15-20 minutes later, we started to talk with Pierre [Bernier]."
"That's how it started. We found it a very pleasant experience. They were very helpful and flexible all the way through. They showed us a floor plan of a bungalow they were building. [We started with that, but] enlarged it and added extra room until we got it just the way we wanted it."
From the very beginning, John credits the constant flow of communication with the two owners of Metric Homes as a huge factor in their decision to buy a new home, and then to customize it down to the very last detail.
"Just about every day, we e-mailed back and forth," John said. "I would have a question and they would reply, or they would make a suggestion and we would respond. It was wonderful! During the course of construction, he [the builder] would take pictures and e-mail them to me. They made us feel extremely welcome to be on site, anytime, making changes on the go, making decisions on the run as the building was taking place."
The Eastwoods were involved throughout every phase of construction of their home and are very pleased this was the case. "If it had not been for the many suggestions and customer service [of the builder], we would have missed [many improvements]," John explained.
"For example, where we have the [downstairs] fireplace and a bay window in Georgie's sitting room [above], we were going to have that cantilevered. Instead, [at the builder's suggestion] we did more excavation and that gave us more space in the rec room below. Also, rather than a door from the kitchen to the dining room, we did a pass-through and made it high enough so that people in either room felt that they were [sharing] the same space."
"Throughout, [the builder] made suggestions for the best use of space. We had played with the location of the shower and tub in the bathroom," said John. "Virtually at the last minute, Michel suggested having a ledge along the back of the ensuite, with ceramic up the front of the tub and up the wall partway."
"He even turned the tub and put the taps at the other end, so "madam can look out the window" instead of facing a blank wall! Georgie put some plants ("and candles" piped in Georgie) in there," adds John. "Now when you look from the master bedroom, it looks like a garden oasis in there."
The Eastwoods listed numerous more examples of special touches, such as a custom railed porch, motion-sensor security lights, a cathedral ceiling in the Great Room, a lovely alcove above the beautiful fireplace, a special three-sided breakfast island, special transition features from one room to another, open stairs to a finished recreation room in the basement, a hideaway for Georgie with a bay window and a workshop for John.
"They really did help us with so many things along the way," beamed Georgie. "We have almost 1,600 square feet on the main floor, plus a fully finished basement. All the main entertainment spaces are on the main floor and we only have the master bedroom and ensuite there. Everything else is in the basement, which doesn't feel like a basement. There is a very large (about 22' x 22') carpeted family room, two bedrooms, another full bath, a storage room and John's workshop. Later, we could even close off the basement and live very comfortably on 1st floor. We really never thought we would have a custom house. We ended up with our dream home."
John emphasized, "We are very happy and would recommend [Metric Homes] to anyone. They were living up to their promise, to make it [the purchase] and all the changes a pleasant experience. They even helped move us in earlier than planned. And we really like the area. The people are really friendly." Stated John. "We're very comfortable here."
With all the personal touches, the Eastwoods ended up paying about 33% more than they would have paid on average for a resale bungalow home, a price they think is very well worth it.
